Texas From The High Wire

Photographs have been taken at thirty-three locations across the state of Texas to date, from the Panhandle to deep in the southeast corner of the state along the Sabine River.  They show the diversity of the landscape, firing the imagination.  Each set is oriented from left to right, North-East-South-West on the compass heading.

Borger, Potter County, Texas.  June 19, 2010.  Ranch land.  88ft. tall.

Landscape -- a picture representing an area of countryside.

Why are we fascinated by drawings, paintings, and photographs of the land?  Why do we buy calendars with photographs of the seasons, postcards of where we stood -- thinking our experience not as good as someone else's?  What are we reaching for, subconsciously?  What are we missing that we long to touch, walk upon, lie upon, stare at in waking dreams, work with our hands?  What is it that is a part of our humanness, our wildness, but no longer our daily-ness?

Pringle, Hutchinson County, Texas.  June 18, 2010. Cultivation/feed, ranch land.  281 ft. tall.

These photographs have been accomplished through the kind permission and trust of  Mr. H.D. McCullough.  Safety precautions were strictly followed as this work required extreme personal risk.

No one should attempt to replicate this experience, for both legal and safety reasons.
